What You’ll Need:
A wooden picture frame with a sturdy backing
Burlap or another textured fabric
A rectangular piece of beige or grey fabric
White lace trim
Jute rope and thin twine
Artificial roses, lavender, small white flowers, and greenery
A small wooden button
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Scissors
Suitable frame-hanging hardware
Prepare the Frame
Remove the glass and clean the frame. Keep its weathered finish for a rustic look, or paint it in muted brown or grey. Let any paint dry before continuing.
Cover the Backing
Cut the burlap slightly larger than the backing board. Stretch it smoothly across the front, fold the edges behind, and glue them down. Secure the covered board back inside the frame.
Arrange the Rope
Lay a piece of jute rope in a broad arch across the upper half of the backing. This will sit behind the fabric canopy. Below it, arrange another piece into a curved umbrella handle, with a straight upper section and a J-shaped curl at the bottom. Check the placement before gluing.
Add the Lace
Cut a fabric rectangle sized to fit inside your frame when folded. Glue or sew white lace along the edge that will become the umbrella’s curved outer border.
Fold the Umbrella Canopy
Fold the fabric back and forth into evenly sized accordion pleats. Pinch the pleats together at the bottom and spread the lace-trimmed edge into a semicircular fan. Secure the gathered point with thin twine.
If the fabric is too soft to hold its shape, attach it to a thin paper backing before folding.
Attach the Canopy
Position the fan over the rope arch, with its gathered point aligned above the handle. Glue the gathered point and the outer ends to the backing, then add small dabs behind a few pleats to support the shape.
Decorate the Centre
Tie a small twine bow over the gathered point and glue a wooden button in the middle. For the detail shown in the video, add a tiny matching pleated fabric fan underneath.
Arrange the Flowers
Before gluing, position the artificial flowers above the umbrella. Place cream roses near the centre, taller lavender stems behind them, and greenery spreading outward. Fill small gaps with white flowers.
Secure the Bouquet
Attach the stems to the backing with hot glue, working from the greenery and taller stems toward the front flowers. Hide the stem ends behind the upper edge of the canopy. Keep the arrangement light so it does not pull on the fabric.
Finish and Hang
Remove visible glue strands and check that every decoration is secure. Attach hanging hardware to the wooden frame. To copy the video’s rope hanger, secure both rope ends firmly to the frame using suitable screw eyes.
Hang your finished piece in a dry indoor space, such as an entryway, bedroom, or living room.
Tip: Lay out the entire design before gluing. This makes it easier to balance the flowers, umbrella, and handle inside the frame.
