What You’ll Need:
One Chinese (Napa) cabbage base
A canvas, canvas board, or thick cardboard
Black, metallic gold, and green acrylic paint
A shallow plate
A small paintbrush
A knife and cutting board
Paper towels
Scrap paper for testing
Prepare the Background
Paint your canvas or board black and let it dry completely. Apply a second coat if needed for an even finish.
Cut Your Flower Stamp
Cut across the cabbage approximately 2–3 inches above its bottom. Keep the base intact so the layers stay together. The cut surface will create the flower pattern.
Dry the Cut Surface
Blot the freshly cut side with a paper towel. Excess moisture can thin the paint and make the print blurry.
Prepare the Gold Paint
Spread a thin, even layer of metallic gold acrylic paint on a plate. Avoid a deep puddle, which can fill the spaces between the cabbage layers.
Test the Stamp
Dip the cut side lightly into the paint and press it onto scrap paper. Lift it straight up without twisting. Adjust the amount of paint until the layers produce a clear floral pattern.
Stamp Your Flowers
Press the painted cabbage base onto the dry black background. Hold it steady, then lift it straight up. Reload with paint and repeat, leaving space between the flowers for stems and leaves.
Refine the Petals
Let the prints dry. Use a small brush and gold paint to add curved petal lines or fill any gaps. The stamp creates the starting shape; the brushwork gives each flower more definition.
For a raised finish, use thick acrylic paint or an acrylic modelling medium suitable for your surface, following its label instructions.
Paint the Stems
With a fine brush and green paint, draw slender stems down from the flowers. Vary their height and curve slightly for a natural arrangement.
Add Leaves and Small Buds
Paint pointed leaves along the stems. Add small gold dots on thin branches to create buds and fill empty spaces without overcrowding the design.
Dry and Display
Leave the artwork flat until all the paint has dried, following the drying times on your products. Frame it or display it on a shelf.
Each cabbage base creates a different pattern, so your finished flowers will be unique.
